Aaron Freiwald

Civil Litigation

123 S. Broad Street, Suite 2170, Philadelphia, PA 19109

For me, the courtroom is the place where David really can stand up to Goliath. My clients, individuals and their families, have gone up against the largest health systems, the biggest insurance companies, the most bad-ass chemical company, the richest pharmaceutical company, and even the United States government. After college, I started as a foreign correspondent and then an investigative journalist. For each article, I would conduct interviews and often review reams of documents. Often, my stories were about those in powerful positions who had misused those positions. Those skills gave me a taste for cross-examination. For my final project as a journalist, I wrote a historical account of the Nazi war crimes trials in Germany, told through the story of one of the last major Nazi figures to stand trial. I attended the trial in Stuttgart, Germany and listened to the stories of Holocaust survivors who testified to the crimes the Nazi officer had committed. I saw just how much the law matters, how the law really is a means to a measure of justice. When my book manuscript was completed and off to the publisher, I turned to the law myself. I found a way to channel my experiences and skills ? writing, investigating, questioning, challenging ? so that I, too, could help people achieve a measure of justice. The cases I take often involve complex issues of medicine and science. A medical procedure that went bad. A devastating medication error that caused a brain or spinal cord injury. A toxic exposure that caused cancer. A product or drug that was defective and caused a serious loss or permanent injury. Of course, the goal is to obtain maximum compensation for the serious wrongs my clients have suffered. We have won millions of dollars in jury verdicts and have obtained millions more in settlements to achieve that goal. The goal also has to be to help the client achieve a measure of justice, to restore dignity and respect. From the first meeting I have with a new client until the moment that person?s case is completely resolved, I always try to remember the road that led me to where I am and the reasons I do what I do.

Jessica Mann

Distinguished Lawyer

Criminal Defense Law

1333 Christian Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147

Jessica Mann is a Philadelphia attorney with the Law Offices of Shaka Johnson, LLC. Admitted to the Pennsylvania bar on October 19, 2015, she appears in the state Disciplinary Board’s directory under her full name, Jessica Consuela Mann. Her registration is active, and the directory places her office at 1333 Christian Street. The firm’s advertised criminal defense work covers state and federal charges, from misdemeanor cases to felonies. Its practice list includes driving offenses, drug and gun charges, theft, domestic violence and homicide. Juvenile offenses and probation or parole violations also appear among the office’s services. Those descriptions concern the firm, rather than Mann’s individual caseload. Mann’s representation of Dayjia Blackwell received coverage in Philadelphia magazine in October 2023. The article identified her as the lawyer for Blackwell, known as Meatball, after Blackwell’s arrest. It also reproduced portions of an open letter in which Mann objected to the media’s treatment of her client. Posted on Instagram, the letter focused in part on the circulation of Blackwell’s tearful mugshot. Mann argued that outlets were using the photograph to attract clicks and sell a sensational story. She offered a different account of Blackwell’s September 26 livestream, describing it as a record of public outrage in Philadelphia. This was the account Mann advanced on her client’s behalf in the letter.

Medical Malpractice Law

15 W. Highland Ave, Suite 15A, Philadelphia, PA 19118

The attorney you choose makes a difference. In medical malpractice litigation, it is the most important decision you will make. Theresa Blanco has the kind of experience and compassion that will see you through the case, beginning to end. The daughter of dedicated high-school teachers, she was the first American-born member of her father’s family, who emigrated from Cuba as refugees in the early 1960’s. She attended American University in Washington, DC on a full academic scholarship funded by the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and Temple University Law School – Evening Division so she could work full time during the day to pay for school. It was at Temple Law that she found her niche in not only trial law, but medical malpractice. A chance schedule change put her in a class taught by the esteemed health law professor, Frank McClellan, and a lot of hard work won her the Trial Advocacy Award for her class. She hit the ground running after graduation working with Eaton & McClellan, with a series of cases which changed the way medical malpractice cases are litigated, how patients and families are compensated, and how cases against hospitals are proven.1 Admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1996, she has spent the last 25 years litigating medical malpractice cases not only in Pennsylvania, but all over the country. Theresa has a particular expertise in cardiac cases, and has consulted on and handled numerous pediatric heart cases in state and federal courts nationwide. She also has a particular interest in pediatric cases which make up a large portion of her work. As more medical records have become computerized over the last ten years, Theresa has been at the cutting edge of interpreting these records and the data behind them to the advantage of her clients, and was one of the first attorneys in Pennsylvania to routinely obtain this data in each case. The details matter and it is the details that will make a case successful. Theresa’s attention to those details and her knowledge of how to utilize them will make all the difference in your case. Not only is she relentless in the pursuit of justice for her clients, Theresa is dedicated to taking the cases that expose health care inequities and discrimination. She was one of the first attorneys to bring claims under the federal Rehabilitation Act in a malpractice case as a result of alleged disparate treatment of disabled children in a hospital. Theresa is an advocate and an ally and she will have your back. You can count on it.

Michael S. Katz

Personal Injury Law

1518 Walnut St suite 310, Philadelphia, PA 19102, USA

Michael Katz was born and raised in Philadelphia. His undergraduate education was split between Drexel University and Temple University, and he received his legal education from what is now the James E. Beasley School of Law at Temple University. While he was enrolled in law school he worked part-time for the prestigious Beasley Firm, where he eventually worked his way up to associate. At the Beasley Firm, Michael worked with and learned from some of the most talented attorneys in the area, including James J. McHugh, Jr. and Michael A. Smerconish. Michael is also one of only a handful of attorneys to have second-chaired a trial with the great Jim Beasley, Sr. himself. As a plaintiffs’ attorney, Michael worked on cases involving medical malpractice, products liability, aviation, breach of contract, securities litigation, civil rights, and more. Following Jim McHugh over to the Lopez McHugh firm was automatic, especially with Michael’s interest in standing up for plaintiffs against pharmaceutical companies. Michael has been a member of the bar since 1995. He is licensed in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, both state and federal courts. His track record of success includes multiple personal injury settlements that have gone into the six- and seven-figures. When Michael is not spending his spare time with his wife Beth and his children —Nikita, Steven, and Ryan— he is a part-time writer and editor, including author of the comedy-western novel Shalom On the Range, and often acts as a mentor to other budding writers. Building on the success of his first novel, Michael recently published his second piece of work titled Six-guns and Sorcerers.
