About Richard

Richard M. Steigman practices personal injury law in New York City as a partner at Gair, Gair, Conason, Rubinowitz, Bloom, Hershenhorn, Steigman & Mackauf. Before becoming an attorney, he worked at the firm as a paralegal. His academic background includes a bachelor’s degree from Franklin & Marshall College and a law degree, with distinction, from Hofstra University, where he belonged to the law review.

Trial work and appeals both figure in his practice. Steigman prepares injury cases, writes appellate briefs and has argued before state and federal courts. His trials have taken him throughout the metropolitan area. Alongside automobile, premises liability and medical malpractice litigation, he has handled employment matters and civil rights cases.

In the Valhalla Metro-North train crash litigation, Steigman and Ben Rubinowitz served as lead trial counsel; the firm reports that a liability verdict was followed by settlements exceeding $182 million. Another matter put him on the trial team with Rubinowitz and Jeff Bloom in a medical malpractice suit against Westchester Medical Center, which yielded a $120 million jury verdict. His appellate work includes a wrongful death case involving a pedestrian struck by a truck, later settled for $26 million.

Steigman has also taught audiences of lawyers and law students. His lectures have included programs for the New York State Trial Lawyers Association and the Practicing Law Institute, as well as appearances at Hofstra and Cardozo School of Law.
