Dean Makricostas serves as city judge in Weirton, West Virginia, where he was born and raised. Before taking that bench, he had worked as a city prosecutor and held judgeships in Wellsburg and Beech Bottom. The Herald Star’s account of his appointment described more than 15 years in local government. At the time, he was practicing with Dittmar, Taylor and Makricostas on Penco Road. He told the newspaper that the appointment offered a chance to give back to the hometown that had supported him.
His connection to the firm appears under its newer name in West Virginia’s business records. The Secretary of State lists him as a member of Taylor & Makricostas, PLLC, at 320 Penco Road in Weirton. The same record dates the change from Dittmar, Taylor & Makricostas, PLLC, to November 30, 2021.
On January 6, 2025, Mayor Dean M. Harris and City Council appointed Makricostas to another term as city judge, covering 2025–2029. A month later, he was among the speakers who met with the Leadership Ohio Valley class during its February 19 government session. The group heard from him at Municipal Court, alongside City Attorney Vince Gurrera, Court Clerk Renee Starr and city code officials.
Makricostas also represents District 1 on the West Virginia State Bar’s 2026–2027 Board of Governors. That district comprises Brooke, Hancock and Ohio counties.
