About Whitney

Whitney Pennington is a divorce and estate planning attorney at Pennington Law Firm, PLLC, in Abingdon, Virginia. Her practice includes both courtroom litigation and negotiated resolutions of divorce and custody disputes. She also prepares estate planning documents, including wills, trusts, powers of attorney and advance medical directives.

Child support work forms another part of her background. As an Assistant Attorney General with Virginia’s Division of Child Support Enforcement, Pennington litigated more than 3,000 hearings covering initial petitions, requests to modify support and enforcement proceedings. Those matters included cases involving Social Security Disability, voluntary underemployment and TANF. Her work has also included representation of individuals with substantial financial portfolios and people living paycheck to paycheck.

Pennington’s earlier public-service roles involved criminal process and university misconduct proceedings. During her first year of practice, she served as a magistrate, assisting members of the public and law enforcement with criminal charges, search warrants and mental health emergency custody orders. In her second year, she was Title IX Coordinator at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, where she heard and adjudicated claims concerning student academic and sexual misconduct.

Before entering law, Pennington studied at Virginia Intermont, graduating with highest honors. She then attended Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, graduating with high honors in 2012. She passed the North Carolina bar that year and became licensed in Virginia in early 2013.
