Distinguished Lawyer

Tax Law

347 West Gordon Avenue, Suite 3, Layton, UT 84041

My wife often jokes that I have a one track mind. Once I set my mind to something, there is no going back. She is right. All my life if I truly wanted something I would stop at nothing to get it. (My wife included). Although she says it is annoying sometimes, as my client it is your greatest asset. I am passionate about seeing that you get the best help possible, and I tenaciously represent your best interests. I know that the IRS can be abusive, manipulative and ruthless. They are the most powerful collection agency out there and I’m your best weapon. Let me tell you a little about who I am and how I got here... I grew up in Bountiful, Utah. I graduated from Woods Cross High School in 1997. In 1998 I served as a volunteer service missionary for my church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, for two years. I served in the Netherlands, Amsterdam Mission, where I learned to speak fluent Dutch. Being a missionary basically means service 24 hours a day. It is there that I learned that I wanted to help people for the rest of my life. My wife, Kellye, grew up in Salt Lake City. We met in February 2002 and after a short engagement we were married by October of that same year. I’ve always wanted to be an attorney, but my schooling was stop and go for a long time. We found out we were expecting a baby in December of 2005. When our first son, Tate, was born the doctor laid him in my arms and I knew right then and there that I had to do better for my son. I remember clearly, I had been working at FedEx in their inside sales department at the time. It was a good job, but not great. I knew I needed to do something more. I looked over at my wife and said to her “I need to go back to school. I need to provide for this family.” And thus my motivation was born. I immediately enrolled in school at Weber State University, graduating Cum Laude in 2008, and then attended Ave Maria School of Law where I received my Juris Doctorate in 2012. During all this schooling we welcomed 2 other boys into our family, Hayden in 2008, and Cole in 2011. My family is my motivator. I love them and thank them for always supporting and believing in me. We now live in Layton City, Utah. While attending law school I discovered a passion for tax. It was strange, because many of my colleagues thought I was crazy, but it just made sense to me. I now understand why I enjoyed it so much, because it would become a part of my life in helping others who suffer the heavy hand of collection by the IRS. Upon graduation we moved to Oklahoma where I gained invaluable experience in tax problem representation. After living in Oklahoma for about a year we decided that we wouldn’t be truly happy until we were back in Utah. In the summer of 2013 we came back to Utah and I gained further experience in dealing with the IRS while working with a local firm. That’s enough about me, let’s get down to the reason you are visiting this site: You are looking for relief from the sleepless nights, constant fear, and uncertainty that come with the burden of owing the IRS. Read on for a better understanding of where you are, and where you can be. I explained that my wife accuses me of having a one-track mind, and fortunately for you she is right: All I can think about is helping you get past this difficult stage in your life. Let’s change your life for the better!

Michael Worel

Michael Worel

Distinguished Lawyer

Medical Malpractice Law

36 South State Street, Ste. 2400, Salt Lake City, UT 84111

One of the nation’s most distinguished and active trial lawyers, Michael Worel has developed a significant record in both the number of cases and the size of jury awards and settlements for catastrophic personal injury and medical malpractice throughout his long career as a lawyer, most recently within the last decade at Dewsnup King Olsen Worel Havas. One of the most highly recognized referral attorneys sought by colleagues across the country, Mr. Worel, along with co-counsels, has amassed many successful major verdicts, including a record $11.2 million award in Utah for a medical malpractice case on behalf of a man seriously injured during a non-indicated brain surgery. In 2014, along with co-counsels, he won for his client a record-setting arbitration award in a medical malpractice case regarding a sciatic injury that occurred during a lithotripsy procedure. With meticulous precision, he evaluates the underlying events of each case. He proceeds with a medical malpractice case only when it has been supported by highly qualified experts. He recognizes that the defendants in the cases he handles rely on the enormous resources of their insurers that will aggressively defend cases even when there is no merit. Despite the financial resources of the insurance companies supporting the defendants, he has continued to achieve success at trial due to his commitment to justice and his clients. Worel has been the lead attorney in many major cases, including a 2018 jury verdict in Utah for a woman with CO poisoning from a car she purchased, a 2014 jury verdict in Mobile, Alabama resulting in a $4 million award for a part time farm worker severely injured by an auger while digging post holes. Other major verdicts include $3.1 million in Utah for a wife and two daughters following the death of their husband and father in a trucking accident case and a $1.4 million verdict for a Cache County, Utah, family regarding the wrongful death of their wife and mother due to a surgeon’s negligence during and after a hernia repair. Licensed to practice in state and federal courts in Utah, Alabama and Georgia, he obtained a verdict of $1.6 million for a turkey farmer in Moroni, Utah, who suffered a mild traumatic brain injury when he was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler pulling two trailers of milk. At trial, Mr. Worel was able to show that, at the time of the collision, the other driver was on the phone with the home office, which caused him to be distracted while driving. A few years earlier, in Mobile Alabama, he received a verdict of $20 million for the family of a 32-year-old wife and mother of two who died after receiving improper anesthesia care prior to an elective laparoscopic exploratory surgery. He is widely recruited to speak before his colleagues on medical malpractice and negligence, and trial practices including the effective tactics for depositions from experts for the plaintiffs as well as handling experts for the defense, and other areas of complex civil litigation. Board certified as a civil trial specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy, he is a long-time regular honoree as among the Best Lawyers in America listing since 2003 in both personal injury and medical malpractice litigation. Within the first few years he moved from Alabama to Utah, he was named by Best Lawyers as Salt Lake City Medical Malpractice Lawyer of the Year (2010) and has been named lawyer of the year in personal injury litigation for Salt Lake City. (2015). In 2007 Mr. Worel was named one of 500 Leading Plaintiff’s Lawyers in America in Law Dragon, Inc. He is also listed in The Best of the U.S., L.L.C. and Super Lawyers. The American Trial Lawyers Association has voted him one of the top 100 trial lawyers in Utah. Before joining Dewsnup King Olsen Worel Havas, he was a partner at Cunningham Bounds in Mobile, Alabama, one of the southeast U.S. most prominent firms in civil litigation, during a tenure that spanned a quarter of a century. He also is committed to several prominent community organizations, including serving on the boards of directors for Big Brothers, Big Sisters; YMCA; Victory Health Partners, a nonprofit health clinic for uninsured patients, the Egyptian Theatre in Park City, Utah, and KPCW-FM, a local nonprofit radio station.

Theron Morrison

Theron Morrison

Distinguished Lawyer

Bankruptcy Law

290 25th St., Ste 102, Ogden, UT 84401

Born in Portland and raised in Boise, Theron Morrison is a consumer-focused attorney who’s spent his career standing up for regular people facing down powerful institutions. He graduated from Metropolitan State University and earned his law degree from Willamette University College of Law in Salem, Oregon, in 2004. Theron’s passion for helping people through financial hardship is rooted in his own childhood. When he was ten, his parents divorced and he lived with his dad, who owned several rental properties. After Theron’s mom stopped paying the mortgages with the rents received, his dad was forced to file for bankruptcy. It was a tough and emotional chapter—but Theron saw firsthand the relief that bankruptcy could bring to a struggling family. That experience shaped his mission: to help others regain their footing when the system feels stacked against them. He began his legal career to fight for the underdog—protecting clients from banks, debt collectors, and corporate bullies. But his scope expanded after watching his own ex-wife be taken advantage of financially during her divorce by what he opined and viewed as a predatory attorney. Once the lawyer saw her assets, he promised her the world, filed unnecessary pleadings, and racked up legal fees without delivering results. That experience lit a fire in Theron to take on family law—determined to bring honesty and fairness to a system that too often rewards manipulation. Theron is a former president of the Weber County Bar Association and of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA), a nationwide group of top-tier consumer bankruptcy lawyers. Outside of work, he’s a proud dad of seven and puts real effort into doing what they love—whether that’s hitting the slopes, road-tripping, or just being present. He’s at his best outdoors, especially skiing and backpacking, and finds peace in a good book and a trailhead. That’s what makes him feel alive.
