Sam Legate

Sam Legate is a founding partner of Scherr Legate in El Paso, where his legal work includes personal injury and labor and employment cases. His firm biography also lists product liability, nonsubscriber work injuries and wrongful death, and identifies him as managing partner. Listed with the State Bar of Texas as Sam Jackson Legate, he is eligible to practice in Texas.

Before El Paso, there was Presidio, the Texas border town where Legate grew up. His education took him to the University of Texas at Austin for a business administration bachelor’s degree, completed in 1983, then to the University of Oklahoma School of Law for his law degree in 1986. Five years of practice in Oklahoma preceded his move to El Paso in the early 1990s. It was a mutual friend, Sue Kurita, who introduced him to Jim Scherr as a potential professional match. His Texas license was issued on March 22, 1991.

Outside the firm, Legate’s record includes hospital board service and a joint donation with Scherr. The two gave $1 million to create the Scherr Legate Trauma Center at University Medical Center. From 2000 through 2007, Legate sat on the El Paso County Hospital District board; he was its vice chair from 2003 through 2007. His work with El Paso Children’s Hospital included becoming a founding director in 2007 and serving as the hospital’s founding board chairman.
