About Isabelle

Isabelle Blouin’s environmental law career includes work with Dentons’ Montréal office, where her practice combined environmental advice with the assessment and management of environmental issues in commercial transactions. Her work there covered environmental compliance, permits, assessment procedures and climate change regulation. She also advised on directors’ and officers’ environmental liability, industrial site development and closure, and the remediation and redevelopment of contaminated land.

Her transactional responsibilities included coordinating environmental due diligence and drafting and negotiating environmental contract provisions. Those assignments involved share and asset sales, financing arrangements and commercial leases. Her clients operated in sectors including manufacturing, renewable energy, agrifood, real estate and transportation. She also analyzed changes in environmental legislation and regulation.

Before joining Dentons, Blouin worked as a senior environmental risk analyst for the Canadian operations of a multinational corporation’s financial services business. In that position, she advised business teams and senior management on environmental risks associated with Canadian portfolios, including mitigation measures and management options. Her responsibilities also included implementing corporate environmental risk policies and procedures and training staff across Canada.

Earlier work included environmental practice at another national law firm and a fellowship with a public interest law firm in Washington, DC. During the fellowship, she examined potential conflicts between the Kyoto Protocol and World Trade Organization rules, as well as environmental questions arising from trade and investment. Her published work includes a 2012 article on the federal environmental assessment process and co-authorship of “The Charter of the Forest – An Enduring Legacy” in 2017.
