About Scott
Scott G. Kaufman is an attorney and founding partner of Heitner Kaufman P.C. in Melville, New York. Surrogate’s Court litigation and administration are central to his practice, which also includes Article 81 guardianship proceedings. He leads the firm with fellow founding partner Brian R. Heitner; its office is on Broadhollow Road.
Guardianship work has brought Kaufman appointments in several capacities: court evaluator, guardian ad litem and counsel for alleged incapacitated persons. Courts have also appointed him as counsel to the Public Administrator. In a separate role, he served as a court examiner in the First Judicial Department. That assignment involved reviewing the annual accountings filed by guardians.
Queens County figures in his earlier public service. His first position in that work was as an assistant district attorney. Before entering private practice, he worked in the Law Department of the county’s Surrogate’s Court as a court attorney.
His professional activities also include writing and teaching. Kaufman has written articles for the Queens County Bar Bulletin on Surrogate’s Court practice and lectures at continuing legal education seminars. He serves as vice chairman of the Queens County Bar Association’s Committee on Surrogate’s Court Practice.
Kaufman’s undergraduate degree is from Queens College. He earned his law degree, a Juris Doctor, at the City University of New York School of Law.
