About Ian

Ian W. MacLean is a White Plains, New York, trusts and estates attorney and a partner at McCarthy Fingar LLP. His clients occupy different positions in an estate or trust: some are beneficiaries or distributees, others fiduciaries or creditors. The matters involve estates and trusts worth less than $1 million as well as those exceeding $50 million. He represents clients in proceedings before New York State Surrogate’s Courts and Supreme Courts.

Not all of his work involves litigation. MacLean also handles estate planning and estate and trust administration. Individuals and couples come to his planning practice with complicated family structures, varied assets, and differing business and income arrangements. At McCarthy Fingar, his practice-group memberships include Trusts & Estates, Estate & Trust Litigation and Taxation. The firm announced his appointment as a partner on June 1, 2026, describing a legal career of more than three decades.

MacLean’s teaching has addressed specific problems in estate practice. His New York State Bar Association presentations include a December 2019 session on 1404 examinations and contested accountings, followed in January 2020 by a program on digital assets, litigation discovery, estate planning and administration. In December 2021, he presented on estate accounting and settlement. He has also written articles and seminar outlines and held leadership positions in trusts and estates practice, including work with the association’s Trusts & Estates Law Section.
