About Matthew

Matthew W. Stein is a personal injury and wrongful death attorney in Louisville and the founding partner of Stein Whatley Astorino, PLLC. He represents clients throughout Kentucky, with a practice that includes injuries from road collisions, medical negligence, falls and industrial accidents. His litigation work also covers disputes over contracts, business torts and other business claims.

Stein’s education began outside the law: he studied agriculture at the University of Kentucky, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1985. He was also a football letterman for the Wildcats. At the University of Louisville’s Brandeis School of Law, he earned his law degree in 1989. Kentucky admitted him to the bar that same year.

Two certifications appear in his National Board of Trial Advocacy directory entry: Civil Trial Law, held since 2004, and Civil Practice Advocacy, held since 2012. The firm’s biography lists him as a fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, as well as a member of the Diversity Law Institute and the Trial Law Institute. In 2007, he presented “How to Present your Case at Trial” for the National Business Institute.

Within his injury practice, Stein represents clients in cases involving cars, motorcycles, large trucks and buses. His NBTA biography also identifies nursing home abuse and neglect, dog bites and job-site accidents among the matters on which he focuses the firm’s litigation work.
