About Matthew
Matthew Patterson is a Chicago birth injury attorney and a partner with Beam Legal Team. His practice focuses on negligence involving obstetrical and neonatal care, including cases concerning hospitals, physicians and nurses. He became a partner in December 2017.
Patterson’s trial work includes cases involving children with brain injuries sustained at birth. In 2022, he and Beam Legal Team obtained a $97.4 million Iowa verdict on behalf of a baby who suffered a traumatic brain injury. He also worked with Jack Beam on a 2019 Illinois case involving a child’s brain injury and Presence St. Joseph Hospital, which resulted in a $23,594,000 verdict. Earlier, in 2016, Patterson helped obtain a $53 million verdict against the University of Chicago in a case involving a failure to diagnose fetal distress and a baby who suffered HIE at birth. These amounts are reported in his firm biography as verdicts, rather than settlements.
Before joining the firm, Patterson studied at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, where he graduated magna cum laude and served as a member of The John Marshall Law Review. His academic record included Dean’s list recognition every semester and eight CALI Awards for the highest grade in a class.
His firm biography lists memberships in the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association of Justice and the Birth Trauma Litigation Group.
