About John

John H. Ruiz is a Miami attorney and the founder of MSP Recovery Law Firm. Florida admitted him to practice on March 24, 1992; his law school is listed as Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad College of Law, class of 1991. The Florida Bar records his full name as John Hasan Ruiz and lists him as a partner/shareholder, eligible to practice and in good standing.

Among the disputes described in his American Institute of Trial Lawyers biography is a case over citrus trees removed from private property in Miami-Dade County. Ruiz represented more than 30,000 residents seeking compensation from the Florida Department of Agriculture. According to that account, the litigation obtained class certification and the department compensated the class members. A separate consumer case concerned Firestone tires: in 2001, he represented plaintiffs challenging their design and manufacture. Out-of-state firms also retained him as local counsel for litigation pending in Florida courts.

Healthcare reimbursement appears in the firm’s account of MSP Recovery v. Ace American, which identifies Ruiz as its founder and quotes him discussing the government’s position. The article concerns whether Medicare subcontractors that paid beneficiaries’ medical expenses could sue under the Medicare Secondary Payer Act. It describes an appellate request for a federal amicus brief in December 2019. Ruiz’s comments addressed the ability of organizations paying for or providing healthcare to recover damages under that law.
