About Caleb
Caleb Mason practices criminal and civil litigation in Los Angeles as a partner at Werksman Jackson Quinn & Mason LLP. His cases take him to both trial and appellate courts, and his background includes service as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District of California.
One of his civil cases concerned a Nevada police officer disciplined over comments on his personal Twitter account. Mason sued on the officer’s behalf, alleging retaliation for speech protected by the First Amendment. According to the firm’s account, the city ultimately agreed to remove the discipline from the officer’s record and pay a $525,000 settlement. His work also includes consulting and appearing as an expert witness in drug-trafficking cases.
Through the Ninth Circuit’s Criminal Justice Act and Pro Bono panels, Mason has represented people unable to afford counsel, among them prisoners, immigration petitioners and criminal defendants. His public service has included two terms on the Claremont Police Commission, from 2015 to 2023.
Mason earned his law degree at Georgetown in 2005, after degrees from Colby College in 1995 and Columbia University in 2001. At Georgetown, he edited the law journal as editor-in-chief; he later clerked for Judge D. Michael Fisher of the Third Circuit. He writes about criminal justice and legal affairs and is the author of the crime novel Stand Up for Bastards. The California State Bar lists his license as active, with admission recorded on December 4, 2006.
